With their roots in improvised sessions as part of club events, art installations and late night jams, the Guessmen were never going to be a straightforward pop group. Alan, Tommy and John had worked together for some time at their club nights Noodles, Kool Your Jets and Easy Tiger forging a sound that encompassed everything from Psychedelia, Dirty Funk, Abstract Electronics and Hip-Hop to free-Jazz.

Officially formed around summer 2001 when the band undertook their first proper recordings, the last year has seen the Guessmen sound distilled from their freeform roots to the focussed avant-pop contained in their debut release, 'Spaceship'. The band have performed at venues across the country, including cinemas, art galleries and open spaces, winning friends wherever they go.

Rising above the glut of faceless local indie clones, the Guessmen's live and recorded sound draws as much from Sun Ra's space jazz and Tom Waits' junk aesthetic, as Autechre's abstracted beats or electro-booty basslines.

Tipped as one of the main bands to watch for 2003 by the North Guide and currently putting the finishing touches to an album, some new club nights and the music for a theatre production, the next few months are going to be an exciting time for the Guessmen.
